Oversize Shipments, Dimensional Calculations and Limits
Dimensional weight (also referred to as "DIM" weight) is a transportation industry standard that is used when packages are large in volume, but do not weigh much.

Priority:

Priority Dimensional Calculations

LSO dimensional weight for priority service is determined by multiplying length times width times height of each package (in inches) and dividing this amount by 194. If the amount determined under that formula is in excess of the actual weight of the package, the charge for the shipment will be based on the dimensional weight.

Example:          Box weighing 10 lbs, measuring 18 x 36 x 36 (23,328 inches)
                        23,328” divided by 194 = 120.2 lbs
Shipper will be billed at 121 lb rate

Priority Limits

LSO maximum dimension limits specify that no package should weigh more than 150 lbs., be no more than 72” long, and measure no more than 130” in length plus girth (two times the width plus two times the height).

Packages in excess of 130” of length plus girth should not be accepted for transportation without approval from operations. If accepted, a special handling fee will be determined taking into consideration the particulars of the shipment and shipper and applied in addition to all other applicable charges.

Ground:

Ground Dimensional Calculations

LSO dimensional weight for ground may apply to shipments that are three (3) cubic feet (5,184 cubic inches) or larger. Dimensional weight is calculated by multiplying length times width times height of each package (in inches). If the total amount determined under this formula is 5,184 inches or more, the total amount will be divided by 194 to get the dimensional rate.

Example:          Box weighing 30 lbs, measuring 20 x 20 x 18 (7,200 inches)
                        7,200” (must be greater than 5,184) divided by 194 = 37.1 lbs
Shipper will be billed at 38 lb rate

Ground Limits

LSO maximum dimension limits specify that no package should weigh more than 70 lbs., be no more than 72” long, and measure no more than 130” in length plus girth (two times the width plus two times the height).

Packages in excess of 130” of length plus girth should not be accepted for transportation without approval from operations. If accepted, a special handling fee will be determined taking into consideration the particulars of the shipment and shipper and applied in addition to all other applicable charges.
